RMIT unveils immersive marketing tech lab to bridge industry gap

As organisations gather more customer data to personalise experiences, they face increasing pressure to balance innovation with consumer expectations around privacy and trust.

To help address this challenge, RMIT University has launched its cutting-edge Marketing Technology Lab, an immersive learning environment that equips marketers with hands-on experience using the next generation of technologies transforming retail and customer engagement.

Designed around a privacy-first philosophy, the lab prepares future marketers to balance data-driven innovation with ethical data practices, informed consent, and consumer trust. “Our role is to prepare graduates who understand not only the technology driving this transformation, but also the responsibility that comes with it. Consumers expect personalised experiences, but they also expect businesses to respect their privacy. We believe innovation and privacy should go hand in hand”, says Dr Jason Pallant,, RMIT Marketing Technology Lab Founding Director.

The lab operates as a fully functioning retail and digital marketing environment, featuring interactive marketing technology, a simulated retail store, and live data display walls that replicate real-world customer experiences.

The global marketing technology (MarTech) sector is now valued at over $700 billion, having doubled in size over the past five years. However, despite record investment, only 28 per cent of organisations report having adequate in-house MarTech capabilities, while 74 per cent cite a critical skills gap. With the technology and business partners we’re already engaging, the RMIT MarTech Lab has the opportunity to set the global standard for MarTech education, research, and practice.

“Technology alone does not create better customer experiences—trust does. This lab gives the next generation of marketers the opportunity to explore how organisations can use data and AI responsibly while delivering the personalised experiences customers expect”, says Shane Duggan, RMIT Senior Industry Fellow (Economics, Finance & Marketing)

“Technology alone does not create better customer experiences—trust does. This lab gives the next generation of marketers the opportunity to explore how organisations can use data and AI responsibly while delivering the personalised experiences customers expect”, adds Duggan.

The RMIT Marketing Technology Lab bridges this gap by enabling students and industry partners to explore how data, creativity, and technology can deliver superior customer experiences without compromising privacy, transparency, or trust.
